Portugal

During World War I, a group of Portuguese high society ladies have volunteered to go to France as nurses for the Portuguese Red Cross. Known as lady nurses, they have surmounted all obstacles and social barriers to carry out an unprecedented mission: to build a war hospital managed by them in Ambleteuse, northern France. Open on april 9th 1918, they didn’t have time to celebrate: the beginning of the dreadful battle of La Lys on the very same day led a horde of Portuguese troops to the hospital.
